Our Secret Identity - The Story Behind Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co.
The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. is a real place! We are the storefront of 826NYC, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting students, ages 6-18, with their writing skills. Our dedicated tutors, storytellers, and workshop leaders help 2,300 New York students a year. Your purchase goes toward supporting our programs. If you would like to make a direct tax-deductible donation, you can do so here.
If you’re in the city or coming to visit you can find us at 372 Fifth Avenue (btw. 5th and 6th Street) in Park Slope, Brooklyn from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 7 days a week. We’re conveniently located near the 4th Avenue-9th Street Station of the F, R, and G trains. Try out the Cape Tester, get DeVillainized, and discover what lies beyond the Portal! If you’re coming on a weekday and want to make sure our doors are open please call us at (718) 499-9884 before you come--we are staffed by volunteers and sometimes their schedules are as volatile as a can of Anti-Matter.
When ordering from Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., please keep the following in mind:
- Our staff is small. We can promise delivery in two weeks. Need your package faster? Please e-mail our store manager, Chris, at firstname.lastname@example.org to see what might be possible.
- Because of the nature of our business and our merchandise, we don't accept returns on online orders. We are happy to answer questions before you order.
- We will very very occasionally have to offer a substitution on some orders. In the case a substitution is not acceptable, we will offer a refund or credit for that part of the order.
Why does a writing and literacy nonprofit need superhero supplies?
Back when acclaimed novelist Dave Eggers and educator Ninive Calegari founded the original 826 chapter in San Francisco, the building they chose for their fledgling tutoring center was zoned for retail. To get past this restriction, 826 Valencia (as our original chapter is known) invented the Pirate Supply Store, a seafarer’s mercantile that simultaneously evokes San Francisco’s history, get the community involved (who doesn’t want to check out a Pirate Store?), and raises vital funds for the organization by selling the finest pirate wares.
Here in New York we have superheroes galore and so we created Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. Founded in 2004, we aim to be a one-stop shop for all of the metropolis’ folks-with-powers (and those who periodically emulate them).
